Dr Sattar discusses the critical role of battery technology towards UK decarbonisation

In our ongoing series of discussions into the role battery technology will play in decarbonising our world, CGLN Director Yulia Chekunaeva speaks with Dr Anwar Sattar, Lead Engineer in Battery Recycling at the Warwick Manufacturing Group.

Yulia and Dr Sattar began by speaking of the importance of developing widespread fast-charging infrastructure, with a focus on solutions that fit more easily into the way in which we live our lives.

Dr Sattar then moved on to explain the reasons behind the ‘skyrocketing’ prices of lithium, and the challenges this poses in achieving the amount of energy we will need to replace existing energy infrastructure. In terms of battery design, Dr Sattar explains why the end of life is more present in current battery designs, difficulties surrounding the recyclability rates of different materials, and the opportunity we have to develop an industry around battery circularity.

Decarbonising our society won’t be a one-stop solution, and this conversation outlined the five separate challenges, technical, political, social , economic and environmental, that we as a society must overcome to tackle the climate crisis.
