Lord Stern is IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government at London School of Economics and Chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment.  He was President of the Royal Economics Society (2018-2019).  He was President of the British Academy (July 2013-2017) and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society (June 2014).  He has held previous posts at universities in the UK and abroad, including Oxford and Warwick universities; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; the Ecole Polytechnique; and the Collège de France, in Paris.  He was Chief Economist at both the World Bank (2000-2003) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (1994-1999).

Lord Stern was Head of the UK Government Economic Service (2003-2007), Second Permanent Secretary to Her Majesty’s Treasury (2003-2005), and Director of Policy and Research for the Prime Minister’s Commission for Africa (2004-2005).  He also produced the landmark Stern Review on the economics of climate change (2005-2007).

Research and publications have focused on the economics of climate change, economic development and growth, economic theory, tax reform, public policy and the role of the state and economies in transition.
