Sean Smith is Director of the Centre for Future Infrastructure and Chair of Future Construction, University of Edinburgh. Primary areas of research include sustainable construction, net-zero innovation and future skills needs. He has held positions as invited guest scientist at government research institutions in Canada (NRC), Italy (IENGF) and Germany (PTB). He has co-authored reports for seven government departments, supported industry to deliver over 80 low carbon construction products to market and served on Scottish industry leadership groups for Construction and Forestry sectors and was chair and report author for ‘new housing and future construction skills’.

His research impacts include incorporation into the programme for government and a recent strategy paper on technical delivery for mass retrofit of housing. Over 1.4 million homes in the UK incorporate his technical-engineering specifications and he led research teams that have twice won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize. He has formed applied research partnerships with over 40 countries. He is an external examiner for the University of Cambridge and serves on a range of committees for innovation, construction regulatory compliance, housing, infrastructure and skills. He is currently chair of the SRPe Infrastructure & Environment Group and ‘resilience’ mission lead for UKCRIC.
